Fly Fishing Guide Service Yellowstone Plan a Trip Shop Fishing Report
As summer wanes and fall moves in, our tactics change. While we still have great dry fly fishing--think Blue-Winged Olives and Fall Caddis--many anglers enjoy targeting the larger brown trout that begin their fall migrations upriver for a place to spawn. The Madison and Missouri Rivers are great destinations and, when left up to us, these are the two rivers that we head for on our days off.

Streamers are the most effective way to target these aggressive fish and it’s not uncommon to hook fish over 20 inches, with some reaching several pounds. Casting streamers can be tiresome, so we recommend fast action 6 or 7 weight outfits for these techniques. Don’t be afraid to throw an 8 wt if you have one.

Fall is a magical time in the Big Sky Country. There's simply something special about standing in a river as golden cottonwood leaves drift by and elk bugle in the background; something special about watching a big brown wake for your favorite streamer tie or a pod of rainbows sipping Baetis during a snow storm.
