Meet Joe S. Moore

Fly fishing, in my family, goes back to the 1950’s. A man by the name of Don Nieman took my father fishing along with his son Dave, when they were just in grade school. He taught them to cast a fly rod along the banks of Mississippi. Growing up in Illinois there weren’t trout streams, but there are bass, blue gill, catfish and farm ponds which rarely get fished with a flyrod. My introduction to fly fishing began with these farm ponds and a fiberglass Fenwick which had been built by my father sometime in the winter of 1983. I remember watching as this rod was wrapped and the cork was formed to fit my small hands. A Pflueger Medalist and an old SA flyline were coupled with the glass rod. As I got older, I was invited along to fish with my father and his friends down in Arkansas and Southern Missouri on the trout streams where one can learn to drift a fly. These guys started their trips out West in the late 70’s, but I didn’t get the invitation until 1992. We spent the better part of a month traveling around Montana and Yellowstone National Park fishing and camping.

During my college years, I began my career working for Montana River Outfitters in Wolf Creek, MT. Three seasons later I moved to West Yellowstone to work for Madison River Outfitters. In the fall 2005 I started Big Sky Anglers, a guide service, based out of West Yellowstone, Montana.

For the last 16 years I have worked in the fly fishing industry, guiding clients on the Madison, Gallatin, Missouri, Yellowstone and all the waters of Yellowstone National Park. I serve on the pro staff for Ross Reels, R.L. Winston Fly Rods and RO Drift Boats. Montana Fly Company sells a few of the patterns that I have designed for various rivers throughout Montana.
